Background Information from the Director Charlotte Wood
Throughout my 15 year career I have always worked in primary and secondary schools, including resource bases and SEND provisions for children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). Many of these children have learning difficulties, and often have diagnoses such as global developmental delay, general learning difficulties, dyslexia, dyspraxia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), Autism, speech delay, speech disorder, language delay and language disorder. Dyslexia and dyspraxia are disabilities that are close to my heart and I understand well as I also have these specific learning difficulties myself.
I have headed up and delivered speech and language therapy services in 4 different schools, both primary schools and secondary schools. This included the Autism Resources Base at Ashcroft Academy Putney, Hillary House ASD unit at Sacred Heart Battersea, and The Moderate Learning Difficulties Resource Base at the Alton School Roehampton.
I have had the privilege to have been directly contracted to work in the same primary school’s Resource Base provision for 10 years. This has allowed me to form strong working relationships with school staff and work continuously with the same children and their families. All the children I work with have Educational Health Care Plans (EHCP), so I am experienced and knowledgeable of the EHCP process.
I really value the importance of developing lasting relationships with children and their families. I have personally seen the huge benefits to both myself in terms of my professional development and to the children and their families in having continuity of the same therapist.
I thrive when I am working as part of a multi professional team. I have worked closely with and collaborated with educational psychologists, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists and drama therapists, ASD and language advisory teachers, Head teachers, SENCo’s, Inclusion managers and specialist SEND teachers.
A huge part of my work involves working directly with parents and teachers advising, training and demonstrating how to support their children at home and in school. I am an ELKLAN tutor and I am qualified to train and accredit adult learners such as teachers and parents with GCSE and A-level equivalent qualifications in speech, language and communication difficulties.
I have worked in both the public and private sector for nearly 15 years years. I worked as a senior Highly Specialist Therapist in the NHS for 7 years with a lead role in the development, implementation and evaluation of service delivery within Primary and Secondary Schools. I also provided management and clinical supervision to Speech and Language Therapists, and Assistants, and provided clinical education for Batchelor of Science and Master of Science Speech & Language Therapy students.
